What is session replay?
Session replay is a UX research technique that records how real visitors interact with your website — mouse movement, clicks, scrolls, form input, and page transitions — and plays them back as a video-like timeline. Unlike analytics numbers that tell you a page has a 70% bounce rate, session replay shows you exactly why: the broken form field, the confusing CTA, the mobile layout that hides the key button below the fold.
How does session replay work technically?
A lightweight JavaScript snippet records DOM mutations, user events, and (optionally) network requests using the MutationObserver and PerformanceObserver APIs. Sensitive fields are masked client-side before data leaves the browser. The captured events are sent to our servers as a compressed event stream, then reconstructed into a pixel-perfect replay of the visitor’s exact browser state at each moment. No video is recorded — the replay is rebuilt from events, which keeps payload sizes small (typically 50–200KB per session).
How is session replay different from heatmaps?
Session replay shows individual sessions in chronological order — what one specific user did from entry to exit. Heatmaps aggregate behaviour across all sessions into a visual overlay showing where visitors collectively click, scroll, and focus. Both are included in our platform: use heatmaps to spot patterns across thousands of sessions, then drill into individual replays to understand why those patterns exist.
